Denver Gold Group teams up with CoRE Learning Foundation
Denver Gold Group (DGG) has partnered with the CoRE Learning Foundation to build and support an emerging talent pipeline for the mining sector.
CoRE, which stands for Centre of Resource Excellence, is a Perth-based organization founded to nurture and promote the next generation of STEM talent for the resources sector. DGG added CoRE to its educational funding program after previously supporting mining discipline students at the Colorado School of Mines and Northern College Ontario.
Launched in 2015, the CoRE Learning Model is in 22 schools in Western Australia, spanning years 2-10 and teaches earth sciences with an extracted and processed minerals context.
CoRE is aiming to expand the program to years 11-12 and beyond WA.
Students in the program experience immersive project-based learning that aims to cover all elements of resources, including business, economics, safety, and human resources.
The 40 educators in the program tie the modules back to the curriculum.
CoRE also has a gamification arm, which provides e-learning tools to 160 schools across Australia.
According to CoRe Executive Partnerships Officer Jacobi Herringer, more than 100 program alumni are now working in the resources sector.
“At a time when the resources sector struggles to attract the best people, programs like CoRE’s initiatives bridge the gap between industry, community, and government and provide a pathway for young people to successful careers in mining,” she said.
DGG Executive Director Tim Wood said CoRE’s innovative learning approach was admirable as a generative pathway mining careers. More broadly, it is a much-needed way of making the benefits of mining tangible to students, their families, and their communities.
"CoRE is an exemplary education initiative that articulates the interdependence between mining and the communities that provide the minerals critical to the quality of life for everyone who consumes and recycles them,” he said.
"It is a fascinating learning model that stimulates interest in careers throughout the mining value chain and helps address the industry's labor and skills shortages."
DGG members, including Newmont Corporation, Gold Fields, and Ramelius Resources, support CoRE. DGG’s involvement also reflects the tremendous growth of its Australian membership base, which is now one-fifth of the total and has an aggregate market value of A$75 billion.
Through its partnership with CoRE, DGG seeks to contribute to developing a skilled and knowledgeable workforce that will continue to drive innovation and sustainability within the mining sector for years to come.
